Report: GM considering CVTs for small cars

General Motors is considering the introduction of continuously variable transmissions in its next round of small cars in an effort to improve fuel efficiency. According to a report from Automotive News, the Chevrolet Cruze is being considered for CVT application, as well as Bowtie's smaller Aveo and Spark compacts.
In speaking with AN, Sohn Dongyoun, GM's vice president of engineering at Daewoo, says that CVTs offer an easy, quick fix in order to help improve fuel mileage. Dongyoun says that GM will need to improve the fuel economy on its small cars by at least 10 percent in their respective next generations.
This will not be GM's first application of CVTs. In the early 2000s, the automaker used CVTs in the Saturn Ion coupe and Vue crossover, as well as the Opel Astra hatchback overseas. This CVT was not well received, however, and was discontinued at the end of the 2005 model year. Currently, no word has been given as to whether or this GM's new CVT would be developed in-house, or when we might see the first applications being offered.

Denny Hamlin Leads Title Contenders in Final NASCAR Practice

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- After struggling in opening practice Friday and qualifying a disappointing 37th for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season finale, championship leader Denny Hamlin showed some signs of progress, posting a top-five speed in Saturday's final practice session -- best among the three drivers in contention for the title.Hamlin's lap of 169.284 mph in the No. 11 FedEx Toyota was fourth best in Happy Hour -- as the final practice is called -- well off Kasey Kahne's pole-winning mark of nearly 177 mph, but ahead of his closest championship rivals. Four-time defending series champ Jimmie Johnson, who trails Hamlin by 15 points in the title hunt, was 22nd fastest in final practice, while Kevin Harvick, who is 46 points behind Hamlin, was 29th fastest.
"I feel pretty good about my car,'' said Hamlin, who made a beeline from the garage to his team transporter after practice. "I feel like we have a better car than the 48 (Johnson). I feel like the 29 (Harvick) is maybe a hair better than us, but we are always a little bit slower in practice than what we are in the race.
"I'm confident that we're going to have a good day tomorrow. We've just got to make sure we stay on the right strategy.''
Harvick, whose Richard Childress Racing teammate Jeff Burton was fastest on the day, was similarly satisfied with his team's preparation -- so much so that he parked his No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevy before the session ended.
"I'm excited,'' said Harvick. "It should be a fun day tomorrow.''

John Force Wins 15th NHRA Funny Car Championship
John Force won an unprecedented 15th National Hod Rod Association Funny Car championship at Pomona, Ca., Sunday, coming back from serious injuries in 2007 to win his first title since 2006.Force, 61, clinched the title in the quarterfinals after points leader Matt Hagan was defeated in an upset by Bob Tasca. Force then went on to the win the race as well, his sixth victory of the year.
He is the oldest champion in NHRA history, but his career was jeopardized by the bad crash in Dallas in 2007 that left him with injuries that took him two years to fully recover from.
The NHRA also crowned its youngest champion Sunday -- 20-year-old Pro Stock Motorcycle rider LE Tonglet.
Larry Dixon clinched his third Top Fuel championship Sunday. It was his first since he won back-to-back titles in 2002-03. Antron Brown was the top fuel winner in the race.
Hagan came into the event 38 points ahead of Force, but after Hagan's first-round loss, Force needed to win two rounds, and he won those with two strong runs.

Hendrick Motorsports may have won its fifth-straight championship just last Sunday, but it took only a matter of days for the organization to make some of its biggest changes in years."This will improve us as an organization, across the board," team owner Rick Hendrick (right) said Tuesday.
Save for champion Jimmie Johnson, each of the three other drivers in the Hendrick stable will have new crew chiefs for the 2011 season.
Steve Letarte, the crew chief on Jeff Gordon's No. 24 since the end of the 2005 season, will now oversee Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 88 team. Meanwhile, Gordon will now have Alan Gustafson managing his team in Daytona.
Gustafson leaves the No. 5 team and driver Mark Martin, who will now have Lance McGrew in his ear for the 2011 season. McGrew has spent part of 2009 and all of 2010 as Earnhardt Jr.'s crew chief.

Tung Takes First Laps In FAZZT IndyCar
SEBRING, Fla. ? Chinese driver Ho-Pin Tung, who serves as a reserve and test driver for the Renault Formula One team, made history over the weekend by becoming the first Chinese driver to take the wheel of an IndyCar during a test with the FAZZT Race Team at Sebring Int?l Raceway. The test, funded by FAZZT?s primary sponsor Bowers Wilkins, was the first step in what the team hopes will become a fulltime effort for Tung in a second IZOD IndyCar Series entry for FAZZT in 2011.

Report: Bernie Ecclestone beaten, girlfriend robbed of over $300,000 in jewelry

Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone was reportedly beaten and robbed outside of his business headquarters in London, England on Wednesday. The Daily Mail reports that the 80-year-old billionaire and his 31-year-old girlfriend had £200,000 (approximately $312,000 in U.S. funds) worth of diamonds and jewelry stolen from them. Ecclestone was also punched and kicked repeatedly - so much so that he was taken to the hospital for a minor head injury, though he was later released.
This marks the second time Ecclestone has been robbed in the last four years. The F1 boss was last jumped after exiting his brand new Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG outside of his home in Chelsea Square. So far, Scotland Yard has not been able to track down the culprits, though it is believed that this incident is part of a larger recent string of attacks targeting the rich and famous.

Man caught driving 200 km/h on public roads gets $235,000 Ferrari taken away

Two speed-loving Canadians have had the keys to their hoon machines taken away. A 2008 Ferrari 430 Scuderia and a 2008 BMW M6 were caught speeding up Mount Seymour in British Columbia, hitting speeds of up to 200 km/h (about 126 miles per hour) in a 60 km/h zone, as well as narrowly missing a mother who was walking with her two children. As you'd expect, the cars were impounded, but the provincial government is taking things a step further. Both vehicles are going to be sold. In fact, the Ferrari has already moved on to a new home and the M6 is set to hit the auction block in the very near future.
The Ferrari is owned in part by a relative of the person driving at the time. That relative will receive 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale, while the other owner receives 30 percent. The government is going to hold on to the rest. The owner of the M6 also receives 30 percent but the government keeps the other 70. The reason for the payouts? To clear notes on each car with the owners respective banks.

Pirelli identifies final tweaks required
Pirelli says its first full-field Formula 1 test in Abu Dhabi has given it a clear idea of the final adjustments it needs to make to its 2011 rubber, but that overall the test confirmed everything it had learned in its own private work with a 2009 Toyota. The new-for-2011 tyres received a broadly positive response from the F1 drivers and teams after the first group test last week, and Pirelli's tyre research and development director Maurizio Boiocchi said that only fine-tuning was now required. "All the teams gave common feedback that we will follow over the next week to improve and optimise the tyre which is, in my mind, already more than good," he told AUTOSPORT. Report: Feds failed to properly monitor California 200 rally that killed 8

The initial findings have come in concerning the accident at the California 200 off-road race tragedy that left eight people dead three months ago. The race promoter, Mojave Desert Racing, was contractually obliged by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to keep spectators at least 50 feet away from the course. In turn, it was the BLM's duty to monitor compliance with that stipulation, and sadly, neither of those things happened.
Just after the accident, A CNN report speculated on how close watchers might have been to the course and the Los Angeles Times indicated that they were within "a few feet." With that in mind, it's amazing that more people weren't hurt or killed. The BLM has instituted new procedures for approving and overseeing races, and the promoter is waiting to have its license reinstated pending the outcome of the investigation. Top tip, Bo!

Juncadella cleared to race after crash
Formula 3 Euro Series race winner Daniel Juncadella has been cleared to continue in the Macau Grand Prix, despite bruising his back in his qualifying accident on Thursday. The Spaniard crashed his Prema Powerteam car at Fisherman's Bend in first qualifying and was taken to hospital for precautionary checks. Cars have earned hero status in a wide variety of TV and film roles through the years. It's rare, however, that the main ride is a van (notable exceptions include B.A.'s van in the A-Team and the Scooby-Doo kids' Mystery Machine.) Artist Brandon Ortwein prefers to imagine a different entertainment history as he asks the important question, "Would it have been cooler as a van?" Ortwein answers that question through his artwork at his website and online store, Cooler as a Van, where you can buy prints of some of entertainment's most famous cars, only re-imagined as vans! Everything ranging from the Wagon Queen Family Truckster, to Thomas the Tank Engine, to Doc's DeLorean, and even Pee-Wee's bike undergo the transformation.
