Childress, Bowyer Appeal Denied by NASCAR Panel

The National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel decided Wednesday to uphold a massive penalty issued to Richard Childress Racing (RCR), denying an appeal from the team and essentially ending the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship hopes for driver Clint Bowyer.

The three-person appeals committee -- consisting of former United States Auto Club (USAC) President John Capels, three-time Daytona 500 winning crew chief Waddell Wilson and former driver Lyn St . James -- found the Childress team did not make a compelling case to overturn the six-race suspension handed down to Bowyer's crew chief Shane Wilson and car chief Chad Haney this week.

And it upheld the 150-point penalty given to Bowyer in the drivers standings and Childress in the owners' standings, the $150,000 fines issued to Wilson and Haney and also the probation term (until Dec. 31) handed to both team members and Bowyer.

Kerr will not race at Brands Hatch

Robbie Kerr has not returned to the British Formula 3 championship for the 2010 championship finale at Brands Hatch this weekend. The 2002 series champion was due to replace Jay Bridger in Litespeed's Lotus-liveried Dallara-Mercedes at Brands. He tested for the squad during the final official test of the season at Rockingham earlier this week, but elected not to race, so Bridger has returned to the car for this weekend's three races.

IIHS: New texting laws aren't reducing accidents

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has just released new findings related to texting-while-driving laws and their effectiveness - the results of which are quite surprising. The Highway Loss Data Institute, an affiliate of the IIHS, compiled claim data for four states; California, Louisiana, Minnesota and Washington. Each state has enacted a ban on texting while driving, and this study examines data for the months before and after the laws went into effect. Earlier this year, the HLDI released data relating to the banning of hand-held cell phones and how those laws had zero effect on crash rates. Its new research refines that study to show that texting bans have produced a more alarming result. In three of the four states examined, crashes increased by three to four percent after the laws were enabled.

Adrian Lund, President of the IIHS and the HLDI, believes the laws do not take into account the overall problem of driving while distracted but merely focus on one aspect of it. Lund states people texted before the laws came into effect and they're likely doing so after. Drivers may now be texting in ways so as not to get caught doing do, such as lowering their phones and thus drawing their eyes down away from the road. Lund also states that he knows texting while driving is dangerous and there is a crash risk associated with it, but the bans are clearly not reducing that risk.

Not everyone agrees with the IIHS study, however. AAA released a statement today that states, "It is not realistic to expect that simply enacting a law to ban texting while driving will have a large, immediate impact on crash totals in a state in the first months." The release goes on to add that in addition to laws, public outreach, high-visibility enforcement, substantial penalties and, most importantly, adequate time are needed before a positive effect can be seen. In other words, holds your horses, IIHS. Likewise, The Detroit News D.C. Bureau Chief David Strickland reported live via Twitter from a Senate Commerce meeting today that National Highway Traffic Safety Administration chief David Strickland said he has questions about the IIHS study and that NHTSA still wants to get at the worst kinds of distracted driving, not just texting, adding that a bee or insect in the car has been shown to be the most dangerous kind.

So are drivers in these states merely making texting while driving more dangerous by lowering their phones out of view? The IIHS research indicates this might be the case, or the uptick in accidents might just be a correlation and not causal. Either way, automakers are developing more complex systems to take these tasks out of the equation eventually. The Ford Sync system and the upcoming UVO unit from Kia will answer and read your texts for you. OnStar is also working on a way to integrate Facebook into GM vehicles. These ideas sound silly but they may help reduce our need to grab that phone so we can keep our eyes on the road.

Full release available after the jump.

Followup: Chrysler fires 13 workers involved in drinking on the job, suspends two

Chrysler workers enjoying their break

A group of Chrysler employees have been in the news lately, causing a bit of a black eye for the automaker. Originally, a Detroit Fox affiliate snagged video of the UAW members really enjoying their break - by smoking weed and drinking beer. Chrysler reacted to the news swiftly, by identifying and suspending 15 employees who were ID'd in the clip. Now, after taking time to investigate the entire incident, Chrysler has put the hammer down - 13 of the Jefferson North Plant employees have been fired and the other two get an unpaid, one-month "vacation."

It's a shame that this happened, but it's good to see Chrysler respond so quickly. The automaker has issued a brief statement on the matter, which you can read after the jump.

Fernando Alonso Wins Singapore GP

Filed under:

SINGAPORE (AP) -- Ferrari's Fernando Alonso has won the Singapore Grand Prix and moved closer to the Formula One championship lead.

The Spaniard made it back-to-back wins Sunday by holding off Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel over the final laps of the race, winning by just two-tenths of a second.

Red Bull's Mark Webber finished third - despite a collision that put McLaren's Lewis Hamilton out of the race. Webber has an 11-point lead in the championship with four races left.

The collision was investigated by stewards, but they took no action.

McLaren's Jenson Button finished fourth, ahead of Mercedes' Nico Rosberg and Williams' Rubens Barrichello.

The naysayers will tell you that every grand prix - especially those held on newer-generation tracks - comes out looking the same. Different scenery, same story, they'll say. But even the haters were silenced a few years back when the Singapore Grand Prix re-joined the calendar as the first night race in the history of Formula One. The spectacle of the most advanced machinery this side of a fighter jet zipping around a seaside circuit under the lights put a fresh spin on F1, and has now become a regular fixture of the racing season.

Now in its third running, the circus rolled in to Singapore's Marina Bay against the backdrop of one of the most hotly contested championships in recent memory. Would this year's night race crown a champion, or defer the suspense for another couple of weeks? Follow the jump to find out.

NASCAR highlights

One of the things I love about NASCAR is the environment that you are in for the races. Sure, its OK to watch it on TV, but the real excitement comes from watching the cars at the track competing against each other.

Also, some of my favorite racers are:

Oscar Larrauri
Gérard Larrousse
Jud Larson

What are some of yours?
